What is the Driver CPC?

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a qualification introduced across the EU β€” and retained in UK law β€” to raise standards among professional HGV and bus drivers. If you intend to drive an HGV as part of your job (for hire or reward), you must hold both an HGV driving licence and a Driver CPC qualification.

Without a valid Driver CPC, it is illegal to drive commercially, and employers are legally prohibited from allowing you to do so. The CPC card (known as the Driver Qualification Card, or DQC) must be carried when driving professionally.

The 2 Modules of the Initial CPC

The initial qualification consists of two tests, both of which must be passed:

Module 2

Theory β€” Case Studies

7 case studies in a written/on-screen format covering real-world professional driver scenarios. Taken at a DVSA theory test centre.

Module 4

Practical β€” Driving Ability

An on-road practical demonstration of safe, fuel-efficient and professional driving. Conducted on public roads as part of β€” or alongside β€” your HGV licence practical test.

Can I Combine CPC with My Licence Training?

Yes β€” and we strongly recommend it. Module 4 of the CPC can be taken at the same time as your Cat C or CE practical test, saving significant time and test fees. We structure our training programmes to make this as seamless as possible.

What Happens After Initial CPC?

Once you hold the initial CPC qualification, you will receive a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), which is valid for 5 years. To renew it, you must complete 35 hours of Driver CPC (Periodic) Training within those 5 years β€” typically taken as 5 one-day courses.

Who Does NOT Need Initial CPC?

Drivers who held a Category C or D licence before 10 September 2009 automatically received "acquired rights" and do not need the initial qualification β€” but they still need to complete periodic DCPC training to keep driving professionally.
